Description
The Futon Shop specializes in natural and organic mattresses, futons, sofa beds and furniture for shoppers who want to pay closer attention to the materials used throughout the home. The collection spans traditional futon mattresses, latex mattresses, hardwood frames, modular sofas, sectionals, toppers, pillows and related bedding.
The company has been operating since 1976 and handcrafts many of its products in California using materials such as organic cotton, wool, natural latex, coconut coir and solid wood.
Natural and Organic Futon Mattresses
Futon mattresses remain at the heart of The Futon Shop collection. Current options use different combinations of cotton, wool, latex, micro-coils and other support materials to create a range of firmness levels and sleeping styles.
Some models are designed primarily for traditional futon frames, while others can also be used on platform beds or as everyday mattresses.
Organic Cotton Mattresses
Selected Futon Shop mattresses use USDA-certified organic cotton within their comfort layers and covers.
Organic cotton can appeal to shoppers who want more transparency about the fibers used close to the sleeping surface. Certification should still be reviewed for the exact mattress and component rather than assumed across every product.
Natural Latex Mattresses
The Futon Shop offers several mattresses using natural Dunlop latex, often combined with cotton and wool.
Latex has a resilient feel and tends to respond more quickly than slow-response memory foam when the sleeper changes position.
Different models use different amounts and types of latex, so shoppers should compare the actual construction rather than relying on the word latex alone.
Wool-Filled Mattresses
Wool is another recurring material throughout The Futon Shop mattress collection.
Selected designs use American-grown wool around cotton or latex comfort layers. Wool can add cushioning and resilience while contributing to the mattress’s overall natural-fiber construction.
Vegan Mattress Options
The Futon Shop also offers vegan configurations for selected mattresses and furniture pieces.
These versions replace wool with plant-based materials such as PLA fiber while retaining other natural components such as cotton, latex and coconut coir where applicable.
Traditional Futons
A traditional futon can serve as both seating and sleeping space, making it particularly useful in guest rooms, apartments, offices and multipurpose spaces.
The Futon Shop offers both mattresses and compatible frames, allowing shoppers to choose the comfort layer separately from the furniture frame.
Hardwood Futon Frames
The furniture collection includes hardwood futon frames in several styles, including American-made Amish designs.
Selected frames are made from woods such as black cherry, oak, maple and walnut and use simple oil finishes rather than heavily coated surfaces.
Sofa Beds and Convertible Furniture
The Futon Shop also offers modern sofa beds and convertible seating designed to transition from daytime seating to overnight sleeping.
This type of furniture can be particularly useful in smaller homes where a dedicated guest room is not practical.
Organic Sofas and Sectionals
The company’s furniture range extends well beyond traditional futons. Current options include sofas, sectionals, modular seating, chairs and ottomans made with combinations of wood, natural latex, wool, coconut coir and natural textiles.
Selected sofas can also be customized with different cushion constructions and upholstery options.
Modular Sofas
Modular seating allows individual sections to be rearranged according to the room and household.
This can be particularly useful for open-plan homes, family rooms and spaces where the furniture configuration may change over time.
Natural Sofa Materials
Selected Futon Shop sofas use solid wood frames combined with latex, wool and coconut coir rather than conventional polyurethane foam.
Material construction varies by sofa, so shoppers interested in a specific natural or organic component should review the exact specifications before ordering.
Organic Cotton Futon Covers
Removable futon covers are available in a range of colors and fabrics, including organic cotton options.
A washable removable cover can make a futon easier to maintain while also allowing the appearance of the furniture to change without replacing the underlying mattress or frame.
Mattress Toppers
The Futon Shop offers toppers made from materials such as wool, cotton and latex.
A topper can change the surface feel of an existing mattress without replacing the entire sleep system. It can add cushioning or introduce a different material close to the sleeping surface.
A topper cannot restore structural support to a mattress that is already badly worn or sagging.
Natural Pillows
The pillow collection includes options filled with materials such as cotton, wool and latex.
Pillow material is only one part of comfort. Loft and firmness should also work with sleeping position, shoulder width and mattress firmness.
Organic and Natural Bedding
The broader bedding assortment includes sheets, covers, protectors and other bedroom essentials intended to complement natural mattresses and pillows.
Shoppers do not need to replace every part of the bedroom at once. Pillows, sheets or a topper can be a practical starting point before making a larger mattress purchase.
Crib Mattresses
The Futon Shop also offers crib mattresses made with natural and organic materials.
Infant sleep products should always be chosen according to current safe-sleep guidance and the exact dimensions and firmness requirements of the crib being used.
Materials and Certifications
The Futon Shop uses several different natural and certified materials across its catalog.
Depending on the product, this can include:
- USDA-certified organic cotton
- Organic cotton textiles
- Natural or organic latex
- American-grown wool
- Coconut coir
- Solid hardwood
- Plant-based PLA fiber in selected vegan products
Certification applies to specific materials and products, so always check the current construction details for the individual item.
Natural Does Not Mean Identical
The Futon Shop carries a wide variety of constructions. One mattress may be mostly cotton and wool, while another may use several inches of latex, micro-coils or other support components.
This makes it especially important to compare firmness, thickness and materials instead of assuming all natural mattresses will feel the same.
Choosing the Right Futon Mattress
Before choosing a futon mattress, consider how the piece will be used.
- Everyday sleeping or occasional guests
- Primary bed or convertible sofa
- Preferred firmness
- Need for flexibility when folding
- Mattress thickness
- Compatible frame dimensions
- Natural, organic or vegan material preferences
Mattress Firmness
Firmness descriptions are subjective and can feel different depending on body weight and sleeping position.
Side sleepers often prefer more cushioning around the shoulders and hips, while many back and stomach sleepers prefer a firmer surface.
The right choice should be based on personal comfort rather than materials alone.
Furniture for Small Spaces
Futons and convertible sofa beds can be especially useful in apartments, vacation homes and multipurpose rooms because one piece of furniture can serve more than one function.
Measure both the seating footprint and the fully opened sleeping dimensions before ordering.
Custom Furniture
The Futon Shop offers customization on selected mattresses, furniture and upholstery.
Custom dimensions and materials can be useful for unusual spaces, but made-to-order products may have different lead times and return conditions from stocked merchandise.
Made in California
Many Futon Shop mattresses, cushions and furniture pieces are handcrafted in California.
The company operates as a direct manufacturer rather than relying entirely on third-party finished products, which allows it to offer multiple material and comfort configurations.
Shipping Across the United States
The Futon Shop ships mattresses and furniture throughout the United States and has specific shipping information for Hawaii as well as the continental states.
Large furniture and mattresses may have different delivery methods and fees from smaller bedding items, so shipping details should be reviewed before ordering.
Hawaii Shipping
The company specifically offers shipping of futons, mattresses and selected furniture to Hawaii.
That makes The Futon Shop particularly relevant for shoppers who may have difficulty finding natural mattress and furniture options that can actually be delivered to the islands.
Return Policy
The Futon Shop’s return terms vary by product and can include restocking fees and customer-paid return shipping.
Because mattresses and furniture are large purchases, review the current return and comfort-guarantee terms before ordering rather than assuming they follow the same policies as smaller retail products.
Who The Futon Shop May Suit
The Futon Shop may appeal to shoppers looking for natural mattresses, traditional futons, convertible furniture or sofas made with materials such as cotton, wool, latex and solid wood.
It may also suit people who need space-saving guest furniture, custom configurations or mattress and furniture options that can be shipped to Hawaii.
Shopping and Product Selection
The Futon Shop carries a very broad assortment, and individual products differ considerably in construction, firmness, materials, dimensions and delivery requirements.
Before ordering, review the exact materials, applicable certifications, dimensions, comfort level, production time, shipping costs and return conditions for the product being considered.
